Nigeria flagbearers Enyimba FC host Buffles du Borgou of Benin Republic in a first round, first leg clash of the 2015 CAF Champions League at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba on Sunday.
The two-time African champions stumbled in the second round last year, losing to Stade Bamako of Mali, and are keen to banish those disturbing memories with a macho display against the Beninoise side.
Incidentally, the People’s Elephant are presently coached by Kadiri Ikhana, the former Nigeria international who coached the team to Nigeria’s first CAF Champions League triumph 12 years ago.
On Saturday, Nigeria’ other flagbearers in Africa’s prime club competition, Kano Pillars swept aside Al Malaika of South Sudan 2-0 in Juba, with goals from Gambo Mohammed and Christian Obiozor.
In Burkina Faso, Warri Wolves started their CAF Confederation Cup campaign on a bright note with a 1-0 win over Racing Club de Bobo-Dioulasso.
However, Port Harcourt side Dolphins FC lost 0-1 to Leones Vegetarianos and will have to be at their best to turn the table in the second leg.
All the second leg matches will come up next weekend.
