11TH AFRICAN U-17 CHAMPIONSHIP
Golden Eaglets in smooth take-off
World champions Nigeria opened their campaign at the 11th African U-17 Championship by flogging host Niger Republic 2-0 in the tournament opening match in Niamey on Sunday.
Victor Osimhen, the Golden Eaglets’ top scorer with 18 goals in all matches prior to Sunday’s match, scored the tournament’s opening goal in the 17th minute.
Skipper Kelechi Nwakali added a second for Emmanuel Amuneke’s wards in the 30th minute as the Eaglets put up a gorgeous display at the Stade General Seyni Kountche.
Victory meant three points in the bag ahead of the Nigeria team’s second match against Guinea’s U-17 squad at the same venue on Wednesday evening.
All four semi finalists at the finals in Niger Republic will represent Africa at the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals in Chile, taking place 17th October – 8th November, 2015. (Full match report coming).
