The U-23 National Team, Dream Team, has been drawn in Group B of the men’s football tournament of this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to play Sweden, Colombia and Japan.
On its way to winning Africa’s first –ever Olympic football gold in Atlanta 20 years ago, the Nigeria U-23 captained by Nwankwo Kanu defeated Japan 2-0 in a group phase match.
The Japanese would be the Dream Team’s first opponents in the competition.
Group A of the 16 –team tournament has hosts Brazil, Iraq, Denmark and another of Africa’s representatives, while Group C has Fiji Islands, Korea Republic, Mexico and Germany. Mexico are the defending champions of the men’s Olympic football gold.
Group D has Honduras, Argentina, Portugal and Africa’s third flagbearers Algeria.
Argentina beat Nigeria to the gold in Beijing in 2008.
